Tips to boost your self confidenceChen Wan Lim
Self-confident people are highly admirable. From the way they walk to the way they talk, these people have the ability to inspire confidence in others. Regardless of your upbringing, the society you grew up with and other surrounding influencing factors, self-confidence can be learnt, practiced on and even enhanced with time. Perhaps for a start, you might need to fake being confident – the saying goes ‘fake it till you make it’. So start taking control of your lives and take actionable steps to be more confident. Here are some helpful tips to start off with:
Tip 1: Positive mind set
Start by having a positive mind set and think about positive thoughts often. It is easy to have self-pity, blaming yourself for the predicament you are in and telling yourself that there is nothing much that can be done to improve. While it is rather normal to feel down, you will need to make the conscious effort to quickly rise back up to take charge of the situation you are in.
Tip 2: Surround yourself with positive people
It wouldn’t help if you constantly surround yourself with people who are negative. Examples of negative people are people who like to gossip, blame others, bicker, argue and constantly looking for excuses. It is time to re-evaluate your circle of company, including your family members. Avoid toxic people who constantly bring you down and have little faith in you. On the contrary, surround yourself with people who are better than you are. Warrant Buffet was once quoted saying, “It’s better to hang out with people better than you”.
Tip 3: Set good life principles
Part of having a positive mind set and hanging around positive people is to have good life principles and to live by it. Think about your current life principles. Maintain the good ones and remove the bad ones. Think about new life principles which will bring you far in life, making you more confident along the way. But remember that having good life principles is worthless without living by it.
Tip 4: Empowering yourself
Empower yourself with knowledge. This is one of the best ways to boost your self-confidence – by knowing more than others. Read more, travel more and learn more. Try enrolling in postgraduate courses as well. Mix with people who are smarter than you are and people who can constantly challenge you to be better every day. Additionally, learn new skills or get new hobbies. Tell yourself that you are able to do many things and that you are able to accomplish great things.
Tip 5: Reinvent your outward appearance
Restyling your wardrobe and getting a new hair cut can also boost your self-confidence. Dressing well will make you feel good about yourself. Once you feel good about yourself, you will feel more comfortable speaking with people and presenting your thoughts and ideas. Reinventing your outward appearance does not take on the meaning of buying expensive clothes. As long as you are comfortable with a presentable outward appearance, you will realise that you are ready to take on the world.
Tip 6: Challenge yourself
Perhaps you are living in a world of complacency. Create new challenges for yourself and test your limits. Set goals and targets which are achievable but require a lot of effort to reach. For example, you can make it a point to speak with one new person every day. Or, you could make it a point to get in contact with someone whom you have not spoken to for over a year. Getting out of your comfort zone will help in boosting your self-confidence. Soon enough, you will feel more at ease speaking with people you do not normally come in contact with.
