The different routes to obtain your APEL certificationYun Ting
APEL, or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning certification is a programme that enables candidates who have not had any formal learning experience to gain access to higher or tertiary education. There are three types of APEL certification which enables applicants to apply to diploma, bachelors and masters level courses. APEL plays a complementing role in the university open entry system in Malaysia. There are two basic ways applicants can gain entry to universities:
Via the MQA
The first method is via the Malaysian Qualifications Agency or MQA. The MQA, under Sections 74-77 (Part VIII – Chapter 7) of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007 will act as the key assessment centre for APEL. If applicants apply via the MQA, applicants can have the option of undertaking the aptitude test at the University Rakan (UR) which are University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and University Pertahanan Malaysia Malaysia (UPNM) or at Wawasan Open University, Open University Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
However, the learning institutions that offer the aptitude tests are subjected to the course which the applicant is interested in applying for. For example, if the applicant is interested in pursuing a degree in civil engineering, then applicants can either do the aptitude test at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA or University Pertahanan Malaysia. If applicants intend to apply for an accounting degree then there is only Universiti Teknologi Malaysia that offers the aptitude test.
Do bear in mind that the abovementioned universities are simply the approved institutions by the government that can offer the aptitude test for APEL. It should not be misconstrued that applicants need to apply and to undertake a degree at the institution at which the aptitude test was conducted at.
Directly to the appointed universities
However, if applicants are certain about the university and the programme that they want to enrol in, then they can directly apply via the approved institutions that accept applications via APEL. Examples of such universities are Management and Science University (MSU), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Multimedia University (MMU), Swineburn University of Technology, Malaysia, University College of Technology Sarawak, INTI University and College etc.
Although these institutions of higher learnings do not conduct the aptitude test, registration can be done through them and the interview session will be conducted by the awarding body itself – usually by the faculty members.
It is therefore better to consult a good postgraduate study consultant to guide you on the best route to take if you are considering enrolling into an institution of higher learning via APEL.
