University of Wales

About University of Wales, UK

Brought into being through the determination, enthusiasm for learning, and generosity of ordinary Welsh people, the establishment of the University of Wales by Royal Charter in 1893 was regarded as one of the most important political and social developments in the nineteenth century. The University of Wales has a long and proud history, playing an important role in the development of higher education in Wales. Through the University’s support for the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS), Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (The Welsh Dictionary), Gregynog Hall (bequeathed to the University in the 1960’s) and the University of Wales Press, it helped to promote and celebrate the language, heritage and culture of Wales. Over the years the University has adapted in order to be in a position to respond to the needs of students, both in Wales and further afield.

In October of 2011, the governing bodies of the University of Wales, Swansea Metropolitan University and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David made a commitment to merge under the 1828 Charter of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The first phase of this process was completed in 2012 with the merger of University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Swansea Metropolitan University, as well as the created of Adduned Cymru -The Wales Pledge. The new university is expected to be fully integrated by 2017. With a strong student base across several campuses, the transformed University will offer a range of service facilities on a local, regional, national and international basis. It will cease to be an accrediting body for other Universities in Wales, will bring to a close validated programmes offered at centres in the UK and overseas and will introduce a new academic model.

Purpose

The University of Wales exists to serve Wales and its people. It does so by:

  • Working energetically to maintain the University of Wales degree and the University of Wales brand as global exemplars of excellence and quality
  • Thereby, supporting and promoting Welsh Higher Education (HE) and contributing positively and significantly to the brand image and brand value of Welsh HE and of Wales as a whole
  • In collaboration and in partnership with other Welsh university institutions and with others in Wales, supporting and facilitating strategic initiatives in Welsh higher education
  • Interacting with the rest of the world, through collaborative academic provision and through other intellectual and cultural linkages and partnerships - taking the best of Wales to the world and bringing the best of the world to Wales
  • Acting as a catalyst for, and promoting opportunity in, innovation, research and the economy
  • Using its position at the heart of the nation’s academic, intellectual and cultural life to develop, support and promote initiatives in these fields; and
  • In all of these activities, building upon its past and present successes to establish a sustainable institution that enriches the national life of Wales.

Values

The University of Wales seeks to realise its purpose whilst maintaining core values which are that:

  • The good of Wales is at the heart of everything it does
  • It is proud of delivering excellence and quality
  • It respects others so that all can give their best
  • It has adopted sustainable development as a central organising principle for its activities
  • It constantly reflects, reviews, refreshes and innovates to remain relevant
  • It is honest, independent and impartial, open and collaborative - trust is the foundation.

University of Malaya

History of University of Malaya

University of Malaya, or UM, Malaysia's oldest university, is situated on a 922 acre (373.12 hectare) campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was founded on 28 September 1905 in Singapore as the King Edward VII College of Medicine and on 8th October 1949, it became the University of Malaya with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College (founded in 1928). The University of Malaya derives its name from the term 'Malaya' as the country was then known.

The Carr-Saunders Commission on University Education in Malaya, which recommended the setting up of the university, noted in its Report in 1948: "The University of Malaya would provide for the first time a common centre where varieties of race, religion and economic interest could mingle in joint endeavour ... For a University of Malaya must inevitably realise that it is a university for Malaya." The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions on 15 January 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur.

In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on 1st January 1962. On June 16th 1962, University of Malaya celebrated the installation of its first Chancellor, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who was also the country's first prime minister. The first Vice-Chancellor was Professor Oppenheim, a world-renowned Mathematician.

Currently, His Royal Highness The Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is the Chancellor of the University of Malaya. Professor Dato' Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin was appointed as the eleventh Vice-Chancellor of University of Malaya on 8th November 2013.

Student Testimonials

I was one of the students who had the opportunity to study one semester for free in the UK. It was an amazing experience in UWTSD, Carmarthen. I love it there! The lectures in UWTSD were very different from what I experienced in Malaysia; in terms of their teaching styles and teaching environment, it really broadened up my mind. I would advise any of you to grab the chance if you have.
