Introduction

This MBA programme provides a course in general, financial and corporate management for individuals seeking career advancement or diversification. The syllabus is similar to that of the UK campus, with very slight variations incorporating local elements. The core subjects are aimed at developing knowledge of the fundamental management disciplines, along with the ability to apply this knowledge to business issues in an integrated fashion. The elective subjects allow you to concentrate in-depth on more specific subjects according to your individual interests and career requirements. You may use the management project to concentrate in-depth on a management topic specific to your individual interests and career requirements.

In addition to lecture delivery, your classes for each module will also consist of case studies, group breakout discussions, and group presentations, depending on module subject matter. Most modules will involve group work with participants from many different industrial, commercial, geographical and cultural backgrounds. You will develop the skills to implement agreed solutions effectively and efficiently, along with interpersonal skills to enable you to interact effectively across a wide range business of stakeholders. Many modules will also include guest sessions with industry practitioners – from multinational corporations, Malaysian companies, entrepreneurs, government-linked organisations, and MBA alumni. You will also have the opportunity of attending study skills sessions and additional workshops and seminars on research methods relevant to management projects.

You must complete a total of 12 taught modules and a management project totalling 180 credits. Each module is worth 10 credits and the Management Project is worth 60 credits. These programmes offer a flexible mode of study that allows part-time students to take modules at their own pace.

University of Nottingham Malaysia offers a world-class British education which is ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide. Designed to reflect University Park Campus in Nottingham, it is a self-contained, vibrant village situated on an attractive and landscaped 125-acre site. The University has around 5,000 students and around 700 teaching and administrative staff from all over the world. According to The Graduate Market in 2016, High Fliers Research, our alumni are Britain’s top choice for employers. We offer the best of UK education in an Asian setting.

History

The University of Nottingham first began as a civic college in the city of Nottingham, UK, in 1881. The college became The University of Nottingham in 1948 and has since rapidly expanded to become a truly global university, with a number of campuses at home and international campuses in China and Malaysia.

1881: Nottingham’s first civic college

Nottingham's first civic college was opened in the city centre in 1881, four years after the foundation stone was laid by former Prime Minister, W E Gladstone. An anonymous benefactor had offered £10,000 for a college on condition that a suitable building be erected by the Council and that the college should be provided with £4,000 a year.

1928: University Park

After the First World War, the college outgrew its original building. A generous gift by Sir Jesse Boot, of 35 acres of land at Highfields, presented the solution and in 1928 the College moved to what is now the main campus, University Park. Initially, it was accommodated in the elegant Trent Building and was officially opened by King George V in November of that year.

Famous visitors

Even in its early days on this site, the College attracted high profile visiting lecturers including Professor Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and H G Wells.

1948: Becoming The University of Nottingham

In 1948, the college was awarded the Royal Charter and became The University of Nottingham, now able to award degrees in its own name. During this period the School of Agriculture was established when the Midland College of Agriculture at Sutton Bonington merged with the University.

Continued growth

The University of Nottingham continued to grow and still focuses on its development and has a number of campuses in the UK and overseas.

Mission

Nottingham makes top 50 in university world ranking

The University of Nottingham has made the top 50 in an annual global ranking measuring universities performance on graduate employability. Nottingham has entered in at number 45 in the Global Employability University Survey 2013-2014 out of a list of 150 global universities. Among the 20 UK universities named in the ranking, Nottingham is also in the top 10.

The list is compiled by French human resources consulting group Emerging Associates along with Trendence, a German polling and research institute. It is based on responses from 2,700 recruiters in 20 countries, who were asked which of their local universities produced the best graduates. Nalayini Thambar, Director of the Careers and Employability Service at the University, said: “To have made the top 50 in a list of global rankings such as this is a great achievement.

It is a testament to the calibre of students who are graduating from Nottingham and their international aspirations. “Not only do students who are studying with us receive a first rate education, but we are also keen to help them develop their employment skills, vocational skills and a global outlook. We are particularly proud of our Nottingham Advantage Award, which is a scheme specifically run to enhance our students’ skills whilst studying for their degree.”

The Nottingham Advantage Award enables students to take extra-curricular modules alongside their academic studies, which build skills and experience in areas such as PR, finance and career planning through activities with the University’s Careers and Employability Service, Widening Participation and the Students’ Union. This is not the first time this year that Nottingham has been recognised for its employable graduates.

The University was also cited as number two in the UK for finding graduate recruits according to a study by High Fliers Research, published in January 2013. The report was based on research with the UK's 100 leading graduate employers including BP, the Civil Service, IBM, Goldman Sachs, PwC, Google and HSBC.

The University of Nottingham is the best university in the UK for graduate employment, according to the 2017 The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, published today (Friday 23 September). The University is also back in the top 20 after moving up five places this year, due mainly to a significant increase in student satisfaction.

Molly who had graduated with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2011 from UNMC, developed and managed the company’s values to bring about social and environmental change in Malaysia, including her promotion of the Stop Violence Against Women campaign, in collaboration with Women’s Aid Organisation, a campaign that raised awareness and funds on domestic violence. Molly spoke about gender equality at the Conference and mentioned that cultural constraints – such as the media and celebrities – shape gender stereotypes and sexism in society. However, she urged women to remove all ‘excuses’ in life and be committed to achieving professional success.

Alumni Testimonials

Being a working executive, I was looking for an MBA programme which has the prestige and international acceptance to give me the edge and stay competitive in the job market. I wanted quality from the teaching staff, to the facilities offered in order to accelerate and support my learning. I am glad to say I found it all in the Nottingham MBA programme.

The Malaysian programme here gives me the same accreditation as the programme in the UK but at a lower cost. Their overseas professors fly in from their UK and China campuses to teach block modules which is of great benefit to many of us. The best of both worlds is what I always say. I had always wanted to do an MBA and I had finally taken that step when I signed up with Nottingham. My analytical skills to evaluate situations, solve problems and make decisions have certainly improved. I have no regrets and I believe it is the best decision of my life.

MBA (Financial Studies), Class of 2010

In my view, the Nottingham MBA is not something you get. It is an active pursuit of academic knowledge, sharing of ideas and experiences and taking a step back to reflect on your career and stretch yourself intellectually. The amount you can learn from your classmates and lecturers is an experience in itself. I felt that the Nottingham MBA programme has taken me to higher grounds, both on a professional and personal level. I'm considerably sharper with my analytical skills, much bolder in my actions, and learned to be humble, knowing that opportunities for learning are limitless. The Nottingham MBA will be a challenge in more ways than you can imagine and I would recommend this programme to anyone who believes in constantly re-evaluating their past, no matter how successful, in order to transform their future.

The NUBS part-time MBA is definitely a challenge from a time management, discipline and intellectual capacity perspective. It takes great planning, sacrifice and many, many late nights rushing for assignments or cramming for exams en-route but the sense of pride and achievement as you collect your scroll is a great return on investments. It is not by chance that the NUBS MBA is renowned around the world. The facilities and faculty are certainly of world class, which naturally translates to a great experience from a learning environment point of view. It boasts several faculty members who are the leading thinkers in their field with strong academic and industry credentials. This is a great testament to NUBS' ability to attract not only top students but top academicians as well. The course also provided a great networking opportunity with senior people from various industries as well as budding entrepreneurs. The camaraderie forged during the programme has been invaluable and will undoubtedly grow stronger and open many more doors in the future. My first degree was in Mechanical Engineering, which I credit for giving me analytical and problem-solving skills. While I never practiced engineering - instead I entered the domain of information technology - my technical training was an asset during the early stages of my career. The NUBS MBA has provided the platform for growth in my career. I have been able to apply the many frameworks, theories and ideas to my work, and the NUBS MBA has definitely helped me to grow professionally. In contrast to the common perception that to take an MBA is to make a short-term sacrifice on work performance, I have benefited from the MBA and gained several promotions throughout. It has been an invaluable experience and asset, and I strongly recommend the NUBS MBA.

Apart from the normal postgraduate learning process, I have also benefited greatly from interacting with international classmates and faculty members, especially during case-study discussions where I discovered how people from various parts of the world solve similar problems in different ways due to diverse backgrounds, experiences and cultures. The Nottingham MBA has indeed transformed me into a more ‘global person’ and equipped me with skills to face the challenges of the ever-evolving global marketplace.
