Career advantage with the University of Reading MalaysiaChen Wan Lim
The priority for many parents when sending their children to university is the career and job opportunities available after graduation.
In an era of uncertain economic growth and rapid globalisation, there is no guarantee of job security, even in large multi-national corporations.
Graduate employment outcomes are therefore an important consideration when selecting a degree programme that matches a student’s interests.
The University of Reading’s Malaysia campus helps students develop their careers specifically in areas where graduates are in high demand.
Areas of focus are finance, accounting, real estate, quantity surveying and law (subject to programme approval) – where we believe career prospects are good, and where we have built partnerships with industry and professional bodies.
For example, the university’s renowned, triple-accredited Henley Business School has partnered with ICAEW (the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) in a unique collaboration called HIP – the Henley-ICAEW Programme.
With HIP, students graduate with three qualifications rather than one. Besides a BSc Accounting and Finance degree, they also get the ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB), and the BFP (Business and Finance Professional) designation after their name.
Students also benefit from a full 12-month work placement in Year 3, gaining valuable experience whilst being fast tracked to ICAEW ACA chartered status. Some secure job offers from their placement company even before graduation.
In our School of Built Environment, the BSc Quantity Surveying has a long and well-established track-record of producing many of the industry’s senior surveyors.
Our QS programme is accredited with RICS, CIOB, BQSM and PAQS, which is advantageous for professional recognition and career advancement.
Students benefit from frequent talks given by industry experts. The school is one of a handful worldwide to have a Building Information Modelling (BIM) lounge equipped with the latest technology.
The university organises an on-campus career fair where students can explore career opportunities and gain insight into what employers are looking for. There are also workshops on CV-writing and interview skills so one is fully prepared when applying for jobs.
